AESTUS is the Latin root of the word estuary. As many New Yorkers know, the East River is not actually a river: it’s a saltwater tidal estuary, found where rivers meet the sea.
According to NOAA’s National Ocean Service, “Estuaries are home to unique plant and animal communities that have adapted to brackish water—a mixture of fresh water draining from the land and salty seawater.” Like the city itself, it’s a place where a unique population has to constantly adapt to new and challenging conditions.
